"We all loved our stay. The resort is beautiful and the staff is the best ever. We loved them all. Yoga was great each morning. The food was exactly what we wanted. The kids loved the pool. Our only complaint was the biting bugs. They feasted on us. Maybe it is the time of year and would not be as bad at another time. If you can find an answer for the bugs your place would be perfect. Thank you for creating such a wonderful vacation. "

Every Day is Earth Day at Playa Viva

Happy Earth Day! In honor of this very important day, we decided to have David Leventhal, the proprietor of Play Viva resort in Mexico tell us what his new eco boutique hotel is doing, not just today but every day, to minimize the damage to the area's ecosystem and in fact, make it better than it was before by using several regenerative practices.

Playa Viva in the Juluchuca village near Zihuatenjo, is an all-inclusive resort situated on a mile of private beach and its 200 acres include an estuary, an Aztec archeological site, turtle sanctuary and a coastal forest and mangrove ecosystem that supports a wide variety of wildlife.

Yeah, this isn't your typical beach resort.

For those of you seeking a more meaningful type of vacation than just sitting poolside and sipping margaritas with dozens of other hotels, Playa Viva offers an escape that allows you to relax when you need it but also have more meaningful interactions with the surrounding area like volunteering at Playa Viva's own turtle sanctuary and accompanying Chef Alejandro to the local market and even assist him in making the meals (which is served at one big communal table to guests.) And of course, everything here is incredibly eco-conscious.

The hotel runs on 100 percent off-grid solar energy, the materials used to build the resort are the best in green technology, there is a comprehensive recycling and waste program and only natural and localized products are used for maintenance and cleaning. We were especially excited to hear that Playa Viva used bamboo to construct the frames of their guestrooms, called casitas, and that they planted bamboo on-site for future use. Additionally, the roofs of the casitas are made from palm fronds also found on the property.

Beyond helping out the local ecosystem, David puts great emphasis on honoring the surrounding community by hiring locally, using local businesses and incorporating their traditions into the hotel's experiences. This is truly a heartfelt and passionate eco hotel from the inside and out.

We'll let David explain more of the hotel's eco activities in the video above but to learn more about Playa Viva, hit up their website here.

There are currently only five guestrooms open now but more are being constructed. Rates from from $195-$795, depending on the room types. There is free WiFi but no TV, which is a good thing for you btw.
