Community building is critical to Playa Viva. We work with a variety of local stakeholders specifically as a model for building local living economies around the concept of triple bottom line - good for business, the ecology and the community. We also work with a variety of partners to support the local community with financial, intellectual, market and social capital.
In 2013, Playa Viva instituted the Regenerative Trust. This is a 2% fee added to the total bill amount for all guests as a contribution to the environmental and community of Juluchuca of which Playa Viva is a part.
The funds will be deposited with the fiscal sponsor of La Tortuga Viva Turtle Sanctuary, the Ocean Foundation, and 100% of funds will be used to support the Turtle Sanctuary and other environmental and community development work around Playa Viva, Juluchuca and the watershed of the Juluchuca river. Because The Ocean Foundation is a 501c3 organization, for US residents the 2% Regenerative Trust portion of your bill is 100% tax deductible as a charitable contribution.
How will funds be used?
1) Turtle Sanctuary: One of the favorite activities at Playa Viva is releasing baby turtles back to the ocean. We can offer this activity to guests because of the hard work of a dozen local volunteers who work nights and take days off from their subsistence living to give back to the environment.
The annual budget for this group is small but difficult for the local community to sustain. They rely on $10,000 to $20,000 a year to keep them operating with supplies of gas, maintenance for their all-terrain vehicle used to patrol the beaches, flashlights, rain jackets, etc.
2) Education: Access to a good education and learning to speak English is fundamental to advancement opportunities for local children. Funds from the Trust are used to support the local school, library and schools up the watershed. Our support includes donations from you through the “Pack for a Purpose” program but it also includes projects that need direct funding such as repair of bathrooms, Internet access, painting and repairs, planting of gardens, etc.
3) Health: Access to quality medical service is a basic community need. The Trust is committed to provide funding and partnering with local community members to improve the quality of infrastructure at the local medical center, and provide needed supplies, equipment, training and staffing for local medical service providers.
4) Economic Opportunity: We see our role not as providing solely financial capital but all other types of capital as well to help create a more resilient and thriving local economy. This involves bringing intellectual, market, social, and so many other types of capital resources to improve the quality of life locally.
Rather than rely on the old fashioned ask, we are stepping up our game and asking you to join us as well by including the Regenerative Trust Fee as a 2% bonus to your total bill.
If for any reason, you decide to opt-out, no problem, no peer pressure, not guilt, no sad eyes or arm twisting. Just let us know and we will kindly remove this fee from your bill.
For the rest of you who join us in supporting the Regenerative Trust, thank you on behalf of the community and environment.
Partners and Projects
Below is a list of some of our partners and projects involved with the Regenerative Trust.
Playa Viva starts its commitment to the community by committing to raise at least 1% of Gross Revenues and placing that amount into a Trust for the Community. We are initially partnering with Ocean's Foundation in creating this Trust. The trust will provide funds for community based initiatives that increase the general health, economy and well being of members of the community of Juluchuca. To make a donation click here
Playa Viva is committed to working with local farmers in a varieties of ways. We started with organic agriculture courses to help clean up the watershed and even assisted a local organic basil farmer in starting a CSA, community supported agriculture cooperative, with the goal of delivering organic produce to local homes, B&B's and hotels. Sal Viva: The Salt of Life
In addition to supporting farmers, we have identified some of the small business in the area, such as the coconut candy factories and the salt cooperative. We are providing these small industries with economic assitance through business training, access to resources and access to markets to increase their profitability and business viability.
We have developed a brand, Sal Viva, with the ultimate goal of increasing the price obtained for the members of the salt coop who continue to use traditional means of harvesting the salt. See more about Sal Viva here or on our blog. Click here to purchase Sal Viva.
We have also identified trash and garbage disposal as a major environmental and health issue for the community (see video)and have begun to partner with larger corporations to provide recycling programs, recycling education in schools and an economic incentive to recycle and more responsible garbage management processes. The practice of burning garbage is common in Mexico. With the addition of plastics and PET bottles to the mix, burning garbage can contribute signicant dioxins to the grownd water and air pollutants. These recycling and education programs will significantly contribute to increase health and well being of the community and ecosystem.
All of these projects take time, resources and commitment. We invite you to join us in supporting these activities, identify new activities and create your own programs for engaging and supporing the local community. As you return to Playa Viva year after year, you will enjoy the growing connection to the people and land surrounding the Playa Viva community.
