Community Stewardship
Community building is critical to Playa Viva. We work with a variety of local stakeholders specifically as a model for building local living economies around the concept of triple bottom line - good for business, the ecology and the community. We also work with a variety of partners to support the local community with financial, intellectual, market and social capital.

"We had the most wonderful time at Playa Viva and I wish I was back there right now! Julia was lovely and the rest of you're staff was so gracious and always one step ahead. We did every activity we had wanted to do and all of the planning and scheduling was seamless. It was exactly what I had in mind when planning this trip. The food was delicious... I honestly can't think of anything negative to say (except for the mosquitos and that I wish I could have stayed longer ;). On our last day, I truly felt like I was leaving family."

Oceans Foundation
Playa Viva starts its commitment to the community by committing to raise at least 1% of Gross Revenues and placing that amount into a Trust for the Community. We are initially partnering with Ocean's Foundation in creating this Trust. The trust will provide funds for community based initiatives that increase the general health, economy and well being of members of the community of Juluchuca. To make a donation click here

Organic Agriculture
Playa Viva is committed to working with local farmers in a varieties of ways. We started with organic agriculture courses to help clean up the watershed and even assisted a local organic basil farmer in starting a CSA, community supported agriculture cooperative, with the goal of delivering organic produce to local homes, B&B's and hotels.  Read More

Sal Viva: The Salt of Life
In addition to supporting farmers, we have identified some of the small business in the area, such as the coconut candy factories and the salt cooperative. We are providing these small industries with economic assitance through business training, access to resources and access to markets to increase their profitability and business viability.

We have developed a brand, Sal Viva, with the ultimate goal of increasing the price obtained for the members of the salt coop who continue to use traditional means of harvesting the salt. See more about Sal Viva here or on our blog. Click here to purchase Sal Viva.

We have also identified trash and garbage disposal as a major environmental and health issue for the community (see video)and have begun to partner with larger corporations to provide recycling programs, recycling education in schools and an economic incentive to recycle and more responsible garbage management processes. The practice of burning garbage is common in Mexico. With the addition of plastics and PET bottles to the mix, burning garbage can contribute signicant dioxins to the grownd water and air pollutants. These recycling and education programs will significantly contribute to increase health and well being of the community and ecosystem.

All of these projects take time, resources and commitment. We invite you to join us in supporting these activities, identify new activities and create your own programs for engaging and supporing the local community. As you return to Playa Viva year after year, you will enjoy the growing connection to the people and land surrounding the Playa Viva community.
